This was taken in the NYC subway in February 2026. Slow shutter, 1/40s, the metro moving past her. She looks like she is somewhere else entirely, deep in her thoughts or lost in whatever is playing in her headphones. The world is literally blurring around her.
That is what drew me to take this shot. There is something in the contrast between her stillness and everything moving around her that felt like it was saying something. If you are too deep in your thoughts, life just goes by. Things blur past and you miss them. It is something I have had to remind myself of a lot. I tend to overthink, to rush ahead of myself, to be anywhere but where I actually am. Photography has been the thing that pulls me back. You cannot take a photo of something you are not paying attention to.
I was still waiting for my green card approval during this trip. Thirteen years in the US and the final step was just sitting there, unresolved. With everything going on at my company at the time, the stress never really left. I was constantly checking the USCIS website, reading through forums, trying to calculate timelines in my head. The anticipation was its own kind of exhausting.
But New York helped. It always does for me. NYC was the first American city I ever visited as a kid and there is something about it that grounds me. Getting out with a camera, paying attention to what is actually in front of me rather than what might happen, was the only thing that made any of it manageable. Photography did not solve anything. It just kept me present long enough to get through it.
